Day 5- Guimaraes

The gardens at the Mateus Castle

Under the "canopy" of a huge hedge!

Our first business of the day was to see the Castle of Mateus- you know, the one you see on the label of Mateus wine!

We weren't able to take photos inside, but we enjoyed the tour, it is a lovely place. Outside we really enjoyed the gardens and grounds, it is a pretty remarkable place.

This day was a holiday and as the Pousada we were booked at is a former monastery (Pousada De Santa Marinha in Guimaraes), there is a church on one end of it and there was a service going on when we arrived, it was pretty crazy trying to find a parking space. Of course, parking in this country is a challenge at the best of times, for us tourists, anyway.

We drove into town and walked around the Guimaraes Castle and a bit around town. Another lovely place to visit.

The Pousada was the largest we have been in yet, and very busy, but really nice too. These old buildings are very ornate and very tall- the ceilings are just incredibly high.
