Day 4- Marao

Today our Pousada was located high up on a mountain, in Marao. Unfortunately, from the time we drove there till the time we left in the morning, it was rainy and pretty foggy and we didn't get to enjoy the view as much as we would have if it had been clear.
It was a beautiful location, but a little stressful to drive on the curvy, high mountain roads. Good thing I am married to a mountain man, eh? lol

For our morning outing before going to the Pousada, we had chose Amarante as our destination. Amarante is located on the Tadega River and was a very quaint little place to sightsee. We still hadn't gotten our times worked out for meals and shopping; most stores are closed between 12:30 and 2 pm and you can only get a proper lunch (as classified by the Portuguese, because what we think of as lunch is considered a snack over there) if you go between 1 and 3 pm.

We were lucky and came across a little wine shop that advertised a traditional tasting of regional treats with a glass of vinho verde- green wine. We got fresh rustic bread, olives, local cheese, a kind of meat similar tasting to Cervelat and a smoked meat that reminded me of the Dutch smoked meat my grandmother used to get. And it was all so good! If you haven't tried green wine from Portugal, you should. Yum!
